About The Children's Community School

The Children's Community School educates the mind, body, and spirit of children from disadvantaged environments and encourages strong parental involvement to insure the success of each child.

The Children's Community School, Inc is a NEASC accredited, pre-K through grade 5 school that is dedicated to working with children from low income families who are socially, environmentally or academically disadvantaged. We provide a child-centered individualized learning experience for youngsters who need extra support in their early years to ensure their future success as students, citizens, and persons. CCS enrollment is kept at about 130 so that class size remains small. Instruction is individualized or in small groups at a level that guarantees progress for each child. After kindergarten, classes are non-traditionally graded 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, so that students may progress at their own rate. The goal of CCS is to develop in students the academic and social skills, and self-esteem, that enable them to complete high school, attend college, but above all, to be productive adults in the work force of their local community. Parent involvement is a key component of the program at the school and their participation insures the success of each child and encourages the family as a whole to reinforce the importance of education. The philosophy of the school is one that understands, has concerns for, and realistically acknowledges existing difficulties of the child. However, it does not permit those difficulties to become an obstacle for learning.

• Incorporated in 1969, CCS provides an education alternative for low-income parents.
• The cost to educate a student at CCS is $6400. Parents pay approximately 4%, $300, of their child's tuition. Generous donors, foundations, Board fundraisers and the United Way make up the difference.

• Seventy-eight percent of the student body is eligible for free or reduced lunch tickets.
• Ninety percent of CCS students graduate from high school compared to approximately sixty percent of their Waterbury peers.
• CCS is open year round offering a full year, all day Pre-k program. The Before and Aftercare program offers childcare from 6:30 am until school begins and after-school until 6:00 pm. Summer programs offer childcare with educational and enrichment programs designed to keep students on grade level.
