A Little Bit About Keys Montessori School

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “An institution is the lengthened shadow of a great person.” In the century since Maria Montessori began to develop her “Montessori Method” of early childhood education, her shadow has lengthened from its humble beginnings in a Rome tenement to include every inhabited continent, almost every major city throughout the world and even to small communities in many countries. Among the latter is Keys Montessori School in the university town of Indiana, PA.

Founded in September 1977 by Christine and Richard Gigliotti, who studied at the Washington (D.C.) Montessori Institute, “Chris” and “Dick brought a combined 19 years of teaching experience to this vibrant community when they established the school.

Dedication and commitment to the principles of Montessori is obvious in the success of Keys Montessori. For over 30 years it has had a major impact on the education scene of the Indiana community and beyond. Using the curriculum materials, the school’s mission is to awaken children’s spirit and imagination by developing their concentration, refined movement, attention span, independence, social responsibility, freedom of choice and high sense of self-esteem. These skills are invaluable as the child explores language, math, geography and the arts in an atmosphere of joyful learning.
