What is orthodontics and why is it important?

Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry which centers on the study and treatment of improper bites, which may result from tooth irregularity or disproportionate jaw relationship.

At what age should orthodontic treatment occur?

We prefer that an initial screening be done by the age of seven. Some interceptive treatment is needed at younger ages as permanent teeth are erupting. Although a patient may not be ready for braces, an early examination allows us to monitor their dental development and begin treatment at the optimum time.

Will braces hurt?

The placement of braces on the teeth will not be painful. However, you will experience some soreness as the initial shift of teeth occurs. Ibuprofen or Tylenol is recommended to our patients for any discomfort you experience.

How long will I have to undergo orthodontic treatment?

The treatment time for each patient varies. Severity of the case, patient compliance and keeping your regular scheduled appointments are just a few of the components in determining the total treatment time.

How much will it cost?

Our fees are based upon the severity of the case and the length of treatment time. We will offer various payment options to help make the treatment as affordable and convenient to you as possible.

Will I still be able to play sports?

Yes. Although we recommend that an athletic mouthpiece is worn for all contact sports.

Will it interfere with playing a musical instrument?

No, but there may be a short period of adjustment after the braces are placed.

Am I too old for orthodontics?

Orthodontics treatment can be successful at any age. A large number of our patients are adults. Just remember, everyone is worthy of a perfect smile!

Are retainers necessary? How long will I have to wear one?

Yes, retainer wear is necessary for all patients after orthodontic treatment. The teeth need to be held in their new position allowing the bones and gum to adapt to their new position. We will monitor your retainer wear for a period of time and the rest is up to you!

Will I continue to see my dentist for regular check-ups?

Yes. It is very important to continue your regularly scheduled dental cleanings while your braces are in place. You dentist works with us in cleaning right around the braces and help us keep a watchful eye on any decay or problems that may arise.
