What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a safe, natural approach to health care.  It is based on the scientific fact that the body has the innate ability to heal itself and that this ability depends greatly on a healthy spine and nervous system.  Chiropractors correct areas of spinal stress, called subluxation, and thereby reduce pain (if present) and remove irritation to the nervous system to promote healing.  There are many causes of spinal stress and this is the cause of many health problems – not just low back pain and headaches!

Chiropractic - It's for Everyone!

Chiropractic is extremely safe, gentle and effective and is an essential part of health care for people of all ages. Northumberland Chiropractic Care focuses on the health of your entire family. From birth to the elderly – people of all ages can benefit from our services. All techniques and procedures are based on our patient’s age, health concerns and individual needs. The focus of the Chiropractic care we provide is on the overall health of the spine and nervous system and your personal wellness.

Newborns

The birthing process can be very stressful on the newborn, especially on their head and neck. It is vital that their spine be assessed shortly after birth to determine whether any trauma has occurred. If spinal stress is not removed it may affect the nervous system and lead to conditions like colic, chronic ear infections, gastric upset or even spinal problems later in life. The procedures and techniques used on newborns are safe and very gentle and the resulting changes in their health are often significant and rapid.

Kids and Teenagers

Regular spinal check-ups are recommended to monitor the growth and health of the spine and nervous system. Children are subjected to many physical stresses as they grow, which include learning to walk, rough and tumble play, sports participation and injuries, wearing heavy backpacks improperly, etc. Catching problems early on promotes optimal health and well-being by avoiding potentially more serious problems down the line. Chiropractic efficiently and effectively deals with most spinal and musculoskeletal injuries sustained by active youngsters and helps keep their nervous system working well so they can stay healthy.

Adults

Today’s stresses are numerous and are not only physical, but emotional and chemical as well. These stresses can overload your nervous system’s ability to cope and create areas of spinal stress, called ‘subluxations’. The slow degradation of your spinal health often goes unnoticed for years because pain and symptoms are usually the last signs! Regular visits to your Chiropractor can help restore proper spinal motion and health and thereby allow your body to heal itself, which it knows how to do naturally, as long as there is no interference. Once patients have started the healing process, many of them continue to receive regular care to facilitate a full recovery and to maintain their spine in its healthier state. We all know that it is far easier (and less expensive) to stay well that it is to get well.

Elderly

Chiropractic care for the elderly provides many benefits including increased mobility, decreased pain and discomfort and most importantly, an improved quality of life. Although there may be significant degeneration in the spine in our older patients the body has a great capacity to heal and there is always room for improvement. Simply allowing a patient to be able to go for a walk or to carry their own groceries can make a huge impact on their lifestyle and independence.

Pregnancy

Pregnant patients benefit tremendously from Chiropractic care. Our gentle, safe and "drug free" approach to pregnancy care is fast becoming a staple of pre-natal care. Studies have shown that women who receive Chiropractic care during their pregnancy have shorter labours and require less drugs and interventions during the birthing process. Techniques, such as the ‘Webster Technique’ for breach presentations, offer safe and effective alternatives for complications during pregnancy.
