SURGICAL OPTIONAL SAFETY & COMFORT PACKAGE
There are many "optional" surgical care services that can be provided for your pet to make it more comfortable and ensure the highest level of safety we can provide. Phone#shopped services offer the basic service requested at the lowest possible fee. Many clients do not understand the seriousness of veterinary surgery. We feel it is important to minimize all risks involved for the safety of your pet. The sad fact is that clients must pay for the level of care they desire for their pet. In our effort to offer the highest quality of pet health care for our clients, we have packaged several optional services we feel are important and suggest you request they be performed at the same time for the safety and comfort of your pet. The request for these additional services will allow us to practice the highest level of quality veterinary care available today.
Our recommended OPTIONAL SERVICES PACKAGE includes:
•PRESURGICAL LABORATORY SCREENING:
This blood analysis provides us with more in#depth information on the health status of your pet before surgery. These are the same blood tests routinely performed in human medicine.
•ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (EKG) SCREENING:
A tracing of the heart's electrical activity provides an in-depth look at your pet's heart. Many heart conditions cannot be detected with the stethoscope.
•TEETH SCALING, POLISHING & FLUORIDE APPLICATION:
It is more cost-effective to perform any needed dental prophy procedures when the pet is already sedated for another procedure. You save the cost of sedation for the dental prophy since the pet is already sedated. A clean mouth decreases the chances of infection after surgery.
•ADDITIONAL PAIN MEDICATION INJECTION AT THE TIME OF DISMISSAL:
New studies show that pets do much better when given a new pain medication by injection at the time of dismissal. This injection will provide the pet with an additional 72 hours of pain relief after dismissal from the hospital. In addition to being much more humane, pain relief is shown to minimize immunity suppression (which can lead to post#surgical infection), shortens wound healing time, and hastens return of appetite. Oral medications are also available, but the convenience of the long-acting injection is easier for most clients.
Other optional procedures that should be considered if needed for your particular pet include:
•Dewclaw Removal
•Wart & Skin Growth Removal
•Umbilical Hernia Repair
•Radiographs
•Toenail Cautery
•Grooming Brush outs and Tangled Matt Removal
All of these procedures can be done at less cost than if needed on an individual basis since the pet is already sedated##which would save you the additional office visit and sedation fees.
Optional Services With Surgery
There are many optional preventive health care services that can be provided for your pet at a reduced fee when the pet is already anesthetized for another surgical procedure. In our effort to offer the highest quality of pet health care for our clients, we suggest the following procedures be done at the same time we are performing other necessary services for your pet. By allowing us to perform these elective procedures now, you will be providing optimum health care for your pet, while at the same time possibly saving you future additional expenses and heartache.
PRESURGICAL LABORATORY SCREENING:
This blood analysis provides us with more in#depth information on the health status of your pet before surgery. These are the same blood tests routinely performed in human medicine.
DISMISSAL PAIN INJECTIONS:
All surgical procedures include pain medication during and immediately following surgery. Additional injections can also be given at the time of dismissal to make the pet more comfortable for the next 12#24 hours.
TATTOO IDENTIFICATION:
Proof of pet ownership is legally dependent on permanent identification on the pet. Most clients use the last 4 digits of the social security number.
REAR DEWCLAW REMOVAL:
These claws are not usually present on most pets at birth. When they are present, they tend to hang on the carpet or other objects, often causing the pet pain##and sometimes bleeding if torn. Removal is easily accomplished.
UMBILICAL HERNIA REPAIR:
This tear in the abdominal muscle wall is sometimes present after birth allowing the internal organs to protrude through the muscle. A small skin "bulge," which can be painful and lead to serious problems if the intestines become twisted, can be seen in the area of the "belly button." It is easily repaired during other abdominal surgery.
WART / SKIN GROWTH REMOVAL:
This is the perfect time to remove small skin cysts & tumors. These skin abnormalities often bleed and become infected from scratching or being caught on other objects.
DENTAL FLUORIDE APPLICATION:
It is now recommended that topical dental fluoride be applied to the teeth of all pets to decrease dental plaque formation, which eventually leads to teeth & gum disease.
TEETH CLEANING.:
It's a known fact that we can add 2 years to the life of the pet simply by keeping the mouth clean. Not only will breath be better, but there will be less chance of dental disease, often caused by a buildup of bacteria under plaque, as well as a decreased chance of kidney and heart disease caused by infections spreading through the body from the mouth.
NAIL CAUTERY:
This procedure allows us to remove a much larger portion of overgrown toenails. Since the pet is anesthetized, we are able to cauterize the nails to control bleeding from cutting the nails back to proper length. Overgrown toenails deform the feet, can be painful causing lameness, and can result in nail bed infections.
GROOMING BRUSHOUTS & TANGLED MATT REMOVAL.:
It's much easier to remove hair matted next to the skin while the pet is asleep, as well as decreasing the danger of injuring the skin.
Pet Dental Prophy Information
Studies show that 60-80% of all pets over the age of three years have periodontal disease and need dental care.
Dental disease in pets causes many problems such as:
•Bad Breath
•Infections Spreading To Internal Organs (Liver, Kidney, Heart)
•Mouth & Gum Pain
•Loss of Teeth
•Future Owner Expense
•Potential Infection Spread To Humans ("Conjunctivitis")
If proper teeth cleaning remove early tartar formation and proper home care of the teeth, your pet will be healthier, live longer, and have better breath.
Proper Dental Cleaning Procedures In Your Pet Include:
•PreSedation Physical Examination
•PreSedation Blood Profile Screening (Optional But Highly Recommended)
•Sedation & Vital Sign Monitoring
•Ultrasonic And/Or Roto-Pro Scaling
•Antiseptic Flushing To Remove Bacteria
•Teeth Polishing To Smooth Surfaces After Scaling
•Fluoride Application To Strengthen Teeth & Build Resistance To New Tartar
•Recovery Day Care Hospitalization
•Long Acting Antibiotic Injection
Note:
Oral Antibiotics May Be Required Depending On Infection Present.
We are dedicated to providing quality health care for your pet at the most affordable fee. Just as in human medicine, it is much better to "prevent" problems rather than "treat" problems. To that end, we have "packaged" the entire dental prophy procedure to provide the lowest fee possible.
WHAT IF EXTRACTIONS ARE NEEDED?
Many pets require sedation before a thorough examination can be completed. The condition of each tooth must be evaluated before a decision is made as to the best course of treatment. Although no one likes surprises, it sometimes is impossible to give an accurate estimate before sedation. From an economic standpoint, it is much more economical to complete all needed dental procedures during the initial visit and sedation rather than having to schedule another appointment with additional sedation required. In an effort to satisfy your desires, please initial the appropriate option below:
•Please perform whatever procedures & extractions are required at the initial visit.
•Please perform whatever procedures & extractions are required up to $__________.
•Please do nothing more than the requested dental prophy procedure at this time.
•Please call me after the exam with an estimate of any additional charges before proceeding.
HOME CARE AFTER THE DENTAL PROPHY PROCEDURE. You will be provided with a detailed handout describing recommended home care at the time your pet is dismissed from the hospital.
Ear Cropping
As a matter of style, certain breed of dogs such as Dobermans, Great Danes, Boston Terriers, Boxers, Schnauzers, and Pit Bulls have their ears trimmed to make them stand erect. You should know it is optional to have this procedure done, however most clients do elect to have the ears cropped.
AGE:
All breeds are trimmed at a minimum of ten weeks of age, provided vaccinations are up-to-date for the particular age puppy. Surgery may be performed at ANY age, but usually is not recommended after six months.
BEFORE SURGERY:
You will need to have an appointment with the veterinarian in order for the general health, as
well as ear structure, to be evaluated to insure that trimming is recommended. We require that
your puppy have a minimum of two Distemper/Parvovirus vaccinations, be free of
intestinal parasites, and be in good physical condition before surgery can be performed.
SURGERY:
•Surgery is performed by APPOINTMENT ONLY.
•Do NOT feed the puppy after 8:00 P.M. the night PRIOR to surgery.
•Remember there is ALWAYS some risk involved anytime anesthesia is used.
•We use the best and safest anesthesia available, evaluate the pet before anesthesia induction, and may recommend ECG screening of the heart rhythm, and blood testing to increase safety and minimize anesthesia risk to your puppy.
•Dogs are usually hospitalized for ONE NIGHT after surgery.
AFTERCARE:
•Dobermans, Great Danes, and Boxers usually require ear bracing after suture removal.
•There is NO GUARANTEE that the ears will stand, however, most will stand with proper after-care for varying periods of time. Corrective surgery is possible later for dogs with
cartilage defects that do not respond to proper taping.
•There is a taping charge for each time the ears must be retaped.
•You will be given an instruction sheet detailing post-surgical care at the time your pet is
dismissed after surgery.
FEES:
The fee varies with the pet’s weight and breed. The initial fee includes anesthesia, surgery, monitoring, hospitalization, and the recheck in ten days to remove sutures. There is an additional charge for future ear bracing and taping after suture removal.
