Hearing Aid Styles
The newest and most popular style of instrument is the RITE, or receiver in the ear. Providing comfort and discreetness to the wearer, it places the receiver in the ear canal, reducing feedback and increasing clarity of sound. The toggle switch acts as the volume control and the programming switch.
The ITC/ITE is still a popular choice for many patients, as manufacturers are able to provide much smaller custom products. A custom mold is made of the patient's ear and the instrument is built to fit the individual ear. Optional controls such as a volume wheel or programming button may be added.
The CIC, completely in the canal, are the tiniest instruments made. They do require a small removal cord to make removal easy. These instruments fit deep inside the ear canal and do not normally have any controls due to their size.
The BTE, behind the ear instrument, is for the patients with more advanced hearing loss. This instrument is usually attached by a custom made ear mold. They are comfortable and easy to care for.
