A Little Bit About Our History
When Paul Whitaker opened the doors of Whitaker Floor Coverings in 1947, he knew he wanted to offer the Newberry public quality service and quality products. He started off with 800 square feet located on Martin Street. Then, the store only carried several rolls of linoleum. In 1952, it moved to Caldwell Street across from Central United Methodist Church where the parking lot is today, and during the twelve years there; carpet, paint and blinds were added to the inventory. In 1964, the business expanded and moved to Boyce Street where a larger variety of paint colors and a greater choice of carpet and vinyls were offered. In 1969, it moved to it's present location on Winnsboro Road. John Paul Whitaker began full-time work with the business in 1974, and is now President and owner of Whitaker Floor Coverings, Inc. In the early 1970's the business was incorporated, and in 1980, a warehouse was addded, enabling the business to keep more choices of inventry items in stock.
Today, the business has expanded it's selection of floor and wall coverings in their 6,000 square foot showroom and 10,400 square foot warehouse. In addition to carpet and vinyls, Whitaker Floor Coverings, Inc., also carries laminate and hardwood floors, and sand and refinishes hardwood floors. Today, the business is known as the largest floor covering business in the area.
Whitaker Floor Coverings, Inc. knows the value of the "old" customer, one who keeps coming back as needs and ideas change. They know that quality, variety, and personal and friendly service have paid off for them during the past sixty-one plus years.
