Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Inhalation Sedation / Laughing Gas)
Inhalation sedation is very safe and has very few side effects. The combination of nitrous and oxygen have no ill effects on the brain, kidneys, liver, lungs or heart. It has been found to be very effective in relaxing the patient within 2 or 3 minutes after onset of administration. There's no "hangover" effect-the gas is eliminated from the body within 3 to 5 minutes after the gas supply has been stopped. The gas is completely reversible by the administration of oxygen. Patients can safely drive home and do not require an escort. The gas also has pain killing properties and can be used on young children for anesthetic purposes. For our adult patients, it may be possible to use nitrous instead of local anesthetic when non invasive gum procedures need to be performed (such as a deep cleaning). It also is proven to be effective in eliminating or at least minimizing severe gagging reflexes.
