Dental Hygiene

What is a dental hygienist?

Registered dental hygienists are licensed preventive oral health professionals. They work alongside the dentist to care for and maintain your oral health.

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums caused by bacteria. The gums become red, swollen and can bleed easily. It is a form of gum disease that can usually be REVERSED with daily brushing, flossing, and regular cleaning by a dental hygienist.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease results from bacteria attacking the structures surrounding the teeth. The end result is bone loss which is not reversible but can be maintained with regular dental hygiene visits.

How is gingivitis and periodontal disease treated?

Both diseases can be treated by having a dental hygienist remove the plaque through a deep-cleaning method called scaling and root planing. Working with the patient, the hygienist will customize an oral health routine to help the patient maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Can periodontal disease cause health problems beyond the mouth?

Yes! Periodontal disease can cause an increased risk of heart attack or stroke, an increased risk of delivering preterm, low birth weight babies, and difficulty controlling blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
