Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect on your first visit?

At Bracebridge Chiropractic & Wellness we take your health seriously. Our assessments and examinations are thorough. All of this takes time, so we ask that you arrive 15-20 minutes early to fill out your paperwork. The doctor will then talk with you to better understand your problem. Your assessment may consist of x-rays and muscle analysis if needed. After the doctor diagnoses your condition, a discussion of treatment options and approaches follows, culminating with your first treatment if appropriate. Please plan to spend an hour for your first visit, and plan on seeing the doctor the following day. We prefer an immediate follow-up visit in order to assess your body’s reaction to the therapy. We will also then discuss different options for continuing care. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. We are open, friendly, and are excited to help you!

Do I need a referral?

No. Chiropractors fall under the category of “primary-care physicians.” Like dentists, a referral is not needed.

Are Chiropractors Doctors?

There are many different types of doctors. Chiropractors are Doctors of Chiropractic. Dentists are Doctors of Dentistry. Your family doctor is a Medical Doctor, etc. Each type of doctor has their specialty. Chiropractors diagnose and treatment conditions related to the bones, joints, and nerves of the body.

Does chiropractic treat any other problems except back problems?

Chiropractic is an effective source of preventative and wellness care for the whole body. The anatomical focus of the DC on the spine has created the perception of the DC as just a "back doctor." Although this perception is not entirely incorrect, it is very much incomplete. Doctors of chiropractic are a highly appropriate resource in matters of work-place safety, stress management, injury prevention, postural correction and nutritional counselling. Remember, there are many bones & joints in the body, all of which can respond well to chiropractic care. Common joints treated by chiroprators are shoulders, wrists, knees, and hips.

Does OHIP cover Chiropractic?

No. However, many insurance health benefits do have coverage for chiropractic, massage, orthotics, etc. Contact your human resources department for details on your plan coverage.

Is it OK to see a chiropractor if I'm pregnant?

class="style3">Anytime is a good time to improve the health of our bones, joints and nerves. Pregnant mothers may find that chiropractic adjustments improve their pregnancy and make delivery easier for themselves and their baby. Adjusting methods are always adapted to a patient’s size, weight, age, and condition of health.

I have heard that once I start chiropractic care, I'll have to continue with it for the rest of my life. Is this true?

You may have heard the notion that once you go to a chiropractor you have to keep going back. Before we answer that question, ask yourself how many times you have visited a dentist? Like most people, you've probably gone dozens of times. Why? Quite simply, to prevent your teeth from getting bad and to maintain their health. Once chiropractic care eliminates your pain and rehabilitates the injured tissues we do recommend that you maintain a schedule of periodic spinal checkups for prevention & maintenance. Like your dentist and like many of the medical experts are now recognizing, prevention is the key to reducing recurrences of existing health conditions and minimizing new injuries in the future. So the answer is yes, we want you to keep coming back, but just periodically. Periodic chiropractic care minimizes spinal and nerve stresses, reduces recurrences of old injuries, prevents new injuries from developing, and minimizes degenerative processes, which enhances overall health and wellness.

Is chiropractic care expensive?

Doctors of chiropractic provide effective, low-cost health care for a wide range of conditions. If an injury is work-related, then WSIB will cover costs for chiropractic care. If an injury is due to a car accident, then the car insurance company will cover the costs for chiropractic care.

Are chiropractors educated as well as medical doctors?

To receive the doctor of chiropractic degree, candidates must complete extensive undergraduate prerequisites (most have an undergraduate degree) and four years of graduate-level instruction and internship at an accredited chiropractic institution. Comprehensive knowledge of all systems of the body and diagnostic procedures enable the DC to thoroughly evaluate a patient, address disorders relating to the neuro-musculo-skeletal system and determine the need for referral to another health care provider.
