Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT)
This imaging device gives patients a view inside their eye's structure and helps patients to better understand their particular eye's condition.
SD-OCT is the most advanced imaging technology, it allows a highly detailed examination of the internal structures of the eye. It is a special imaging scanner that creates a three dimensional image of the inside of the eye. We can see below the surface of the retina and view microscopic layers beneath; as well as, image the structures of the front of the eye.
The SD-OCT is very helpful in the precise diagnosis of many diseases of the eye, including macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal disease and other pathologies. Any changes over time can be detected when comparing previous saved scans.
Humphrey Visual Field Perimeter (HFA)
Validated by decades of research and clinical experience, HFA is the accepted standard of care in glaucoma diagnosis and management. With HFA you can feel confident you're providing the best possible care for your patients. Glaucoma Progression Analysis software provides advanced, accurate progression analysis for better glaucoma management. It helps quantify the likelihood of progression and identify high-risk patients.
Corneal Topography
This instrument measures the exact shape of the front surface of your eye (the cornea). Using 1000 points your doctor will have a 3 dimensional map of the curvature of your corneal surface. This is used for contact lens fitting, refractive surgery, monitoring keratoconus and to diagnose and monitor any irregularity of the cornea.
Digital Fundus Photography
Retinal Camera technology is particularly important to detect and monitor ocular health at the retina. Often, we find things with this technology that might not be detected using more traditional examination methods. As well, it provides a permanent record of the condition of the retina so that small changes over time can be detected. It is particularly good at finding subtle changes at the retinal level for macular degeneration, diabetes, hypertension and glaucoma.
Corneal Pachymetry
A pachymeter is a device that uses ultrasound to determine the thickness of the cornea (the clear tissue in front of the coloured iris). Pachymetry is an essential measurement prior to certain refractive surgical procedures, such as LASIK.
A measure of corneal thickness is also important when measuring the pressure inside the eye. If corneal thickness measurements are thicker or thinner than average the intraocular pressure may be overestimated or underestimated. This is very important when following or testing for glaucoma.

If there is a health concern you may be advised to seek regular care at quicker intervals.
The most important thing you can do to preserve your eyesight is to visit your eye doctor for regular checkups. Like the rest of your body your eyes will change gradually as you age. However, unlike the rest of your body, the eyes rarely hurt if something is wrong. We'll advise you when it's time to be re-examined. So, don't rely on broken glasses or lost contact lenses to remind you of your next appointment. Follow the advise of experts, have your eyes examined on a regular basis.
Our expertly trained eye doctors will perform the most extensive eye exam to include vision testing and a thorough assessment of your eye health.
Vision testing includes a detailed analysis of your vision status with your present glasses, your contact lenses or simply your eyes. It is the first important step in your examination. Then using advanced equipment, we will do a series of lens tests (called a refraction) to determine if you need glasses or contact lenses to improve your vision. If you need a correction, not only can we make you see better, in many cases we can enhance your academic, occupational or recreational performance.
All complete examinations include an eye health assessment with a technique called ophthalmoscopy. This procedure allows the doctor to examine the internal structures of the eye. With this scope the doctor is able to see the optic nerve, retinal blood vessels and the retina in general. In addition to cataracts and glaucoma, many systemic diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes show up here.
We also perform a painless procedure called tonometry to measure the pressure inside your eye or intraocular pressure (IOP). This common test is important in the detection of glaucoma.

Children are welcome, as we believe that all should start life with the best vision.
They need special consideration when it comes to eye exams. Your Child should have their first eye exam before they turn 2 years old. 80% of learning is visual and as such children need to have annual exams before they start school and every year while they are in school. We are fortunate living in Ontario in that the provincial government still covers eye exams annually for children. We provide an inviting and fun environment for your children.
If your child does need glasses, our Eyewear Gallery has a huge variety of glasses for your children to pick from, and we will ensure that your child's first experience with glasses is positive. We also provide contacts for children with special needs or for those who are actively involved in sports.
Our office refers to several well respected laser clinics in Ontario. With our independent advice, we can tell you which is the best clinic for your particular case.
Laser refractive surgery is a procedure to eliminate or reduce near sightedness and astigmatism and now hyperopia. The two most common procedures are LASIK and photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).
Quick information about laser refractive surgery:
Canadian surgeons are leaders in laser surgery. The first PRK procedure on a human eye took place in 1989. Overall 95% to 98% of patients receive at least 20/40 vision, meaning you could drive legally or play sports without glasses. You can usually return to work three days after the surgery. You have to know that not everyone gets crisp 20/20 vision after surgery.
The vast majority of patients who have gone through laser corrective surgery have been successful. The goal is to reduce one's dependence on spectacles, typically people do not require distance glasses after the surgery. In some cases glasses or contact lenses are required for occasional use.
To be a candidate you must meet the following requirements:
• Be at least 18 years old.
• Have a stable prescription for 1 year.
• Be free of certain diseases of the eye.
• Have realistic expectations about the procedure.
• Understand that complications, as in any surgery, while rare, can result.
