Damon, Self-ligating Braces: Our office uses one of the newest, most advanced techniques in braces which do not require tiny rubber bands around each bracket to hold the archwire thus allowing:
• More natural, smoother movement of the teeth
• Less pain due to lighter forces
• Longer time between appointments which translates into less time missed from school or work
• Usually a shorter treatment length
• No expanding appliances are placed in the roof of your mouth to be turned with a key
• Aside from 3rd molars (wisdom teeth) permanent teeth are seldom removed - this translates into a wider, more attractive smile and younger looking face
• The braces are generally a silver metal but clear braces can be used in the upper front for an almost invisible look when you smile.
Clear, Removable Aligners: Selected cases may elect to have treatment done without braces. After we have done special impressions of your teeth a clear plastic tray system, similar to bleaching trays, is set-up in a lab off site and shipped to us ready to install. You will be given two to three sets of these at each visit, usually 6 weeks apart, to be worn a specified length of time for each set. The lab will decide the treatment length determined by the number of trays needed to move your teeth into the desired position. Following the treatment retainers will probably be needed, as with any orthodontic treatment.
Post-treatment Retainers: No orthodontic treatment can guarantee that your teeth will not move without the use of retainers following treatment. We use several types:
• *Hawley retainer (removable)- an acrylic base is used behind the teeth with a wire wrapped around the front of the teeth to corral them in the correct position.
• Vacuum retainer - a clear, removable tray, similar to a bleaching tray (can be used for that also)
• Bonded retainer- a wire "glued" to the back of 2 to 4 front teeth, either upper or lower or both to prevent separation or movement of those teeth. It is intended to be there for your lifetime but may need repair occasionally.
*Removable retainers are generally only to be worn at night. See "Life With Braces" for other care and instructions.
