Cleanings and Prevention
Professional Dental Cleanings - Your dental prophylaxis is performed by highly trained hygienists to ensure that your teeth, as well as the oral cavity, stay healthy. The cleaning consists of the removal of plaque, a sticky, almost invisible film of bacteria that can lead to tooth decay. Calculus, or tartar, will be removed with special dental instruments. This hardened form of plaque occurs above and below the gumline and can lead to gingivitis, or even a more severe form of gum disease called periodontitis. Your teeth will be polished to remove any stain that has built up over time.
Dental Examinations - After your cleaning, an examination is completed by Dr. Armento. The necessary X-rays are examined for the detection of tooth decay, bone loss, cysts, tumors, or recurrent infections. A head and neck oral cancer screening is performed to check the face, neck, and lips for any suspicious bumps or lesions. Dr. Armento will also use the ViziLite Plus intraoral, soft tissue, cancer screening test to make sure the mouth is free of any precancerous or cancerous abnormalities. The gums and bone around the teeth are checked for gingivitis or periodontitis. Old restorations such as crowns, bridges, or silver fillings are examined for possible fractures or recurrent decay.
Prevention - Dr. Armento and his staff are committed to ensure that every patient can keep their teeth healthy for a long time. Through a cooperative effort with the patient we will strive to preserve the natural dentition and supporting structures by preventing the onset, progress, and recurrence of dental diseases and conditions. Sealants are placed on the molars of children, and young adults, to prevent tooth decay. Fluoride treatments are used to strengthen the enamel and disrupt the production of acids caused by cavity forming bacteria. Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet. It is continued in Dr. Armento's office by the efforts of our dental hygienists to promote, restore, and maintain your oral health.
